BEL COLLE Piemont(Verduno)

Brothers Franco Pontiglione, Carlo Pontiglione, and Giuseppe Priola founded Bel Colle winery in the late 1970s. Over the decades their work with nebbiolo has stood at the center of their operation, and their Barolos and Barbarescos have been lauded and sought-after. In particular, their work with the Monvigliero vineyard (which some have referred to as the “Grand Cru” of the Verduno area of Barolo) has garnered notice. The winery was purchased in 2015 by Luca Bosio, an innovative young winemaker in Piedmont who represents the third generation of his family to tend vineyards and make wine in Piedmont. Bosio seized the opportunity to purchase such a prestigious property in Verduno, which is known for producing wines that are more delicate with an exceptional elegance and spicy, floral character. Notes of white pepper, dried strawberry, and violet are typical. Also unique to Bel Colle is the presence of a small vineyard planted to an ancient and rare indigenous grape called Pelaverga that is nearly extinct. The winery does produce a small amount of wine from this vineyard and it is highly sought-after.

"There are big things on the horizon for Bel Colle. The historic winery managed for almost 40 years by the Pontiglione and Priola families was taken over by Bosio Family Estates in 2015. The group has operated for more than half a century and today their estate comprises more than 350 hectares of vineyards. Bel Colle is going forward with the same brand and identity with a selection of wines whose style, for the moment at least, can only be called classic, though without ignoring modern approaches when it comes to maceration and aging. The Monvigliero vineyard proves to be a great cru again.”-Gambero Rosso-2018
