“Spelt is, and has always been, a modern, bold, well made and very ripe expression of montepulciano, rich and extracted without going over the top. Oak influence seems to have been pulled back in recent years, allowing for a more pure expression of the variety's dark, plummy fruit to the fore. Tannins are abundant but ripe and velvety, alcohol does warm the palate at 14% declared, but integrates well enough in the end.
